Computer vision is hard!

Today’s xkcd comic is relevant to this blog.

xkcd comic #1425

Mouse-over text: “In the 60s, Marvin Minsky assigned a couple of undergrads to spend the summer programming a computer to use a camera to identify objects in a scene. He figured they’d have the problem solved by the end of the summer. Half a century later, we’re still working on it.”

And a year later you see a news item like this!

Is this result really newsworthy? They claim that “it gets the bird right in the top three results about 90 percent of the time”. This means that the app will tell you “it is either a tit, a finch or a magpie”, but it will be something else 10% of the time. Not what I call useful…

400 species is a difficult problem to do well, these results are actually quite nice. But this news item makes me think: if this was a press release from another university, say Uppsala University, would this have been picked up by the media?
